US stock futures traded flat on Monday, but the move looked more like positioning for a heavy week than a fresh risk-on signal.

S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures were up about 0.1%, while Dow futures gained 0.2% in the latest premarket indications.

Investors are balancing a modest retreat in oil against a calendar packed with bank earnings, inflation data and semiconductor results.

Brent remains above $100, the Treasury cash market is shut for the US holiday, and Wednesday’s CPI report could quickly revive the rates pressure that pushed long yields to 24-year highs earlier this month.

5 things to know before Wall Street opens

1. Brent eases, but the geopolitical premium is still large

Brent slipped towards $104 and WTI traded near $91 as markets weighed Donald Trump’s proposed Russia-Ukraine energy ceasefire and plans for more Russian diesel exports.

The relief is limited by continued Middle East disruption, including attacks around Saudi Arabia and shipping risks near the Gulf.

ING analysts said a meaningful fall in refined-product prices will require more normal trade flows through the region, rather than simply additional Russian barrels.

2. Bonds are quiet today, but CPI could change that fast

The US Treasury cash market is closed on Monday, temporarily removing one source of equity-market volatility.

Wednesday’s CPI is expected to show headline inflation accelerating to 0.6% month on month and 3.7% year on year, while core inflation is seen rising 0.2% monthly.

Morgan Stanley strategist Mike Wilson told MarketWatch that higher market yields are already tightening financial conditions, potentially reducing how much additional work the Federal Reserve needs to do itself.

3. Banks will test whether high rates are still helping profits

JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Wells Fargo report on Tuesday, opening an earnings season in which S&P 500 profits are expected to rise roughly 30%.

The real test is whether higher yields are lifting net interest income faster than they are hurting loan demand and credit quality.

4. ASML and TSMC could reset the AI trade

ASML reports on Wednesday, followed by TSMC on Thursday. ASML has confirmed its third-quarter release for October 14.

TSMC is expected to post a sixth straight record quarterly profit, with net income forecast to rise 65% to about T$746 billion.

Morgan Stanley’s Charlie Chan expects full-year revenue-growth guidance to move into the low-to-mid 40% range.

5. IREN jumps as Amazon keeps spending on AI

IREN rose about 5% premarket after The Information reported a multiyear cloud agreement with Anthropic.

Amazon was little changed after The Wall Street Journal reported it was in talks to acquire AI startup Decart for about $7 billion.

US refiners Valero and Marathon Petroleum also edged higher as investors assessed the prospect of additional Russian diesel supply.
